For first time visitors

A Discovery is when porttracker scans the network starting with one or more seed devices. porttracker will extract information via SNMP from seed devices to locate other infrastructure devices. Information is then extracted from those infrastructure devices in an attempt to locate other infrastructure devices. This process is repeated in a recursive fashion until no other infrastructure devices can be found. After the discovery phase, network infrastructure devices are (optionally) automatically assigned to pollers.

Customers are able to discover different networks from a centralized location using SNMP credentials and address ranges. All data in one discovery realm is completely separate from data in another. This allows customers to discover data in completely separate networks, overlapping address ranges and reports on the data separately. A Discovery Realm also allows the user to configure different schedules for different parts of the network. Each discoverable region of your network can be named and is known as a Realm. Realms are defined using network/mask combinations that allow you to define how much of the network porttracker ‘sees’. Starting with a configured seed address for each realm, porttracker will automatically discover the switches in the realm and assign them to a poller.
