Porttracker has been designed with high performance in mind, however performance is nothing without control, and therefore certain areas of the discovery and polling offer the administrator the ability to throttle and contain these processes to protest the network bandwitdth and the network devices themselves.
Realm Definitions; porttracker will attempt to discover the full topology of your network. Restrictions can be put in place to contain the devices selected to specific address ranges.
Throttles; In addition to this ICMP ping can be restricted to a user definable bandwidth on a granular basis to protect slower networks. DNS queries can be limited to n/sec, however it should be noted that porttracker caches DNS entries for performance reasons
Retries and timeouts;
The number of SNMP retries / Timeout values can be altered to cater for slower networks as devices may need more time to respond to the SNMP queries.
